Nothing much is left, only an R636 and only
one R621 is still there. The first one is clearly visible but is
sealed of from the public. The R621 is buried under the dune sand
and cannot be entered anymore.
There were rumours that these bunkers would
also be demolished. I hope not as they are the only bunkers left
from this railway battery. Or are there others still buried in the
dune sand ?
The battery has been modified quite a few times.
The previous E694 Eisenbahnbatterie was merged with this one holding only
the E690 name. Alhough some guns were already in use from 1941, on
November 15 1943 it had 4X28cm 'kurze Bruno Kanone' with a range of 29.5km.
This old WWI design gun was useless against naval targets.
Bunkertypes: 134K, R607, SK, R612, R613, 5XR621,
4XR622, R636, 2XR667 and an R680.
There were two observation posts for this
battery; one at Wenduine: R636 and at Raversijde: R637.
Approximately the same place. Most bunkers have disappeared.
Postcard from 1978 showing the situation then. There are still some bunkers in the background which have all disappered by now.
View from the seaside. the R636 is still standing firmly in de dunes.
Front view of the R636. Same place were a Bulgarian delegation visited the battery in 1944.
Above: Side view of the R636. The
concrete plate at the right is the entrance of the R621.
Unfortunately the concrete is so heavy
it is impossible to enter. Be carefull here. I wouldn't risk my life
in here.
Entrance of the R636. It's not accessible anymore. Right the same entrance during a Bulgarian visit at the battery in 1944.
Top of the modified R636.
A mast was standing here during post WWII
years when it was in use for the Belgian Navy.
Has almost everything been demolished or
are there still some other bunkers buried in the dune sand ?Concrete wall
or remains of a bunker.
Finally January 2009 a piece broke off.
Not clear what this is.
Debris or something else ? Has almost everything been demolished or are there still some other bunkers buried in the dune sand ?
